Angels n Airwaves
Tom DeLonge is buzzing. The Angels & Airwaves captain has less than two months before steering his latest voyage 'I: Empire,' into record stores on Oct. 23 and he can't wait to share it. Recorded at the group's laboratory inside Macbeth Footwear in Carlsbad, California, the effort, which DeLonge dubs, the second half of a "double album," offers a template on life, which he and his bandmates want to impart on the world.
"It's kind of like the saga that describes this philosophical message that we have," DeLonge tells Popeater. "The first record was really based around -- if you can envision an idea that you can live your life to then you can see the world differently and you can see yourself in this world differently, then maybe the world itself could change. In the second half of the record, 'I: Empire' is acknowledging that, that thought and that movement/consciousness is inside of you and it goes everywhere you go, so change happens naturally."
The outfit just released a teaser from the upcoming release, the single 'Everything's Magic,' which hit radio and recently premiered on iTunes. They've been playing it and the first half of the outfit's message -- debut album, 2006's We Don't Need to Whisper at a handful of shows this summer. With the conclusion of their template still two months away, we asked DeLonge, if people already are clued in.
"I think a lot of people are, but I don't expect everyone to," he says. "I think the idea of a song on the radio is kind of like a business card and then people read it and hear it and like it and they'll come in and get a little bit more."
In fact, notes the fresh-faced frontman, heading to the band's gigs, will find you a hoard of early converts. "When you come to an Angels & Airwaves show, where it's just our show, they all absolutely get it and love it and feel it and are a part of it," he notes. "A show ... it's like we're sending out business cards, we're saying we're part of an idea, a grander thing that can happen if you let it. It will make you cry and fall in love."
